Term Life Insurance: How Much Cover Does Your Indian Family Really Need?

Term life insurance is the cheapest, simplest, and most powerful form of life cover available in India — and yet the one most Indians either skip entirely or buy for far too little. If your family depends on your income, term insurance is non-negotiable.

Why Term Insurance Over Endowment or ULIP?

Traditional endowment plans, money-back policies, and ULIPs all mix insurance with investment — and do a mediocre job of both. A term plan is pure insurance: you pay a small premium every year, and if something happens to you during the policy period, your family receives a large lump sum. If nothing happens, the premium is “spent” — just like your car or health insurance premium. That is the whole point.

The math is stark: a healthy 30-year-old non-smoker in India can buy ₹1 crore of cover for around ₹700–₹1,000 per month — cheaper than most people’s food-delivery bills.

How Much Life Cover Do You Actually Need?

The most widely used rule of thumb: 10 to 15 times your current annual income. So if you earn ₹12 lakh per year, aim for ₹1.5 crore of term cover minimum. But a better calculation is the Human Life Value method:

  • Total outstanding loans (home loan, car loan, personal loan)
  • + Cost of children’s education until they finish college
  • + Spouse’s living expenses for their remaining life expectancy (adjusted for inflation)
  • – Existing savings, investments, and other insurance

The result is the sum your family would need on Day 1 if you were not around. Round it up to the nearest crore and buy that much term cover.

Riders Worth Adding

  • Accidental Death Benefit: Doubles the payout in case of accidental death.
  • Critical Illness rider: Pays a lump sum on diagnosis of specified illnesses.
  • Waiver of Premium: Future premiums are waived if you become disabled or diagnosed with a critical illness.

Tax Benefits

Premiums paid are eligible for deduction under Section 80C up to ₹1.5 lakh per year, and the death benefit paid to your family is fully tax-free under Section 10(10D).
